May Summer Camp
This STEM summer camp invites children aged 2+ to explore movement as a meaningful, hands-on learning experience—where science and literacy grow together. Using carefully selected picture books as starting points, children are encouraged to question, investigate, and express their ideas through talk, play, drawing, and movement.
Each week introduces a new way of thinking about motion—pushing and pulling, gravity, balance, and design—through open-ended exploration rather than structured activities. Children revisit ideas, test their theories, and communicate their thinking in multiple ways, supported by facilitators who value curiosity and experimentation.
Rooted in a Reggio Emilia-inspired approach, the camp treats books as tools for research and children as capable thinkers, building early scientific understanding alongside rich language development.

STEM content for Summer Camp
Theme – ‘What Moves?’ – 5 weeks
STEM and literacy are deeply connected.
In the early years, STEM may be one of the most powerful literacy contexts we have—inviting children to speak, listen, draw, gesture, argue, revise, and tell stories based on real experiences.
These books have been selected because they don’t explain movement; they make children curious enough to investigate it. Each book opens a different doorway into motion, and together they support real research, not activities.

- push and pull
- stuck vs. moving
- gravity without formal language
- clear cause-and-effect moments
Reggio connections:
- Encourages retelling, reenactment, and shared meaning-making
- Supports collective discussion and revisiting theories
SEPs (educator language):
- Asking questions (Why did it stop?)
- Planning and carrying out investigations (trying different ways to move)
- Constructing explanations based on experience
- Communicating ideas through talk, play, and drawing

Text:
Minimal, precise text
-
Why it belongs:
This book gives children a big, invisible force to think with—without shrinking it.
What makes it powerful:
- movement without touch
- falling, orbiting, drifting
- perspective shifts
It invites children to ask:
- What’s pulling this?
- Why does it move like that?
Reggio connections:
- Honors children’s capacity for abstract and systems thinking
- Encourages theory-building over fact collection
SEPs (educator language):
- Developing and using models (visual, physical, gestural)
- Analyzing patterns of movement
- Constructing explanations from observations
- Using evidence to support ideas
We have additional After School activities from 4 – 6pm.
